How can our children learn about one of the worst events in history?

Sharing stories, particularly stories of children, enables us to envision what it was like to live in the past and think about what we might have done if we were there. Sharing stories with our children is one of the best hopes for instilling values of tolerance, acceptance, and empathy -- reducing the possibility of future "worst events."

What?

This year's Through Children's Eyes' book is Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It is the story of Annemarie Johansen, a 10-year-old Danish girl, who undertakes a dangerous mission to save her best friend. The story of Annemarie is an introduction to the choices Non-Jewish children faced during the Holocaust and an introduction to the role of rescuer.

In 2009, we discussed Twenty and Ten by Claire Huchet Bishop. Based upon actual events, twenty school children hide ten Jewish children from the Nazis occupying France during World War II. The story of these children is a breathtaking example of children in the role of rescuers.

What Might Children Learn?

That personal risk may be necessary in order to stand up and do what is right

That one person can make a difference

That history repeats when people don't learn and understand the past!

What Might Adults Learn?
